PROPOSAL
1. Introduction
SMS or Short Messaging Service has been around for many years. With virtually everyone in possession of a
mobile phone these days, SMS is the best way to contact someone to say something. The use of SMS in business
and service industry has been rapidly growing. Here are some examples:
1. Banks are providing mobile banking services through SMS.
2. Use of VAS (Value Added Services) to interact with mass is very popular for services like Voting, CRBT,
Exam Results, etc.
3. Some popular websites like Facebook, Google, etc., use SMS to authenticate users.
1.1 Push SMS
Push SMS is used to send text messages to people’s cell phones. Push technology is also used to send e-mail
messages without having to check their e-mail manually. The result is a more efficient means of receiving
information. Examples of push messages for notifying about a meeting in an organization is letting the members
know about the meeting is sending the same message to all the members in a single click.
Different Uses of Push SMS:
a) Information
If any kind of information or notice is to be circulated, Push SMS is highly applicable. To circulate such notices,
people are generally sending e-mails or making phone calls. Making phone calls to a large number of people
consumes more time and money. In case of e-mails, it is not certain that all the intended people will have
opportunity to check their e-mails regularly. But if the message is delivered in one’s handheld device, it is
guaranteed that all intended people will have chance to look at the message promptly. This saves time, effort and
manpower and hence money.
b) Marketing
Today’s market lies in competition of price, quality and services for each organization. Those companies who
promote their product’s quality, price and services will get the best results. A product’s quality will not get its
worth if it is not promoted. If product is not well endorsed, then the probability of getting consumer at high ratio is
less.
"message at your fingertips"
c) Greetings and Wishes
It is a common thing that to be sustainable in a competitive way, customers should be well treated and well
behaved. Hence, SMS service plays a vital role in that. For Example, if customer visits first time to an office, they
should be greeted with a SMS like “Thank you for your visit.” If that kind of message is circulated, customers will
have a positive impression towards the organization. Moreover, SMS is highly used for organizations to send SMS
as a wish in special occasions, festivals, or any programs.
1.2 Pull SMS
The ability to request services (e.g. ringtones, games) from a wireless handset via sending a preset SMS code to a
predetermined number. The service requested is sent back to the handset via SMS. Examples of pull SMS include
information-on-demand, subscription service, SMS-based games, SMS contests, opinion polls, and SMS voting
services.
Different Uses of Pull SMS:
a) Banking
Customers can entertain pull services like account balance enquiry, mini statement request, electronic bill
payment, transfers between customer’s own accounts, stop payment instruction on a cheque, requesting for an
ATM card or credit card to be suspended, deactivating a credit or debit card when it is lost or the PIN is known to
be compromised, foreign currency exchange rates enquiry, fixed deposit interest rates enquiry, etc.
b) Exam Results
Students can gather any information like their result details, examination roll number, examination centre name,
etc., through Pull SMS.
c) Voting/Polls
SMS Poll is the easiest and fastest way to find out what your audience is thinking. Your audience votes by sending
an SMS or web voting from their device, computer or mobile phone.
